Lata Mangeshkar
Nightingale of India, Lata Mangeshkar, will be presented with the first-ever
National Yash Chopra Memorial Award this October.
The award, instituted by T Subbarami Reddy Foundation, in the memory of late filmmaker Yash Chopra, will be presented to the iconic singer on October 19 in Mumbai. It carries Rs 10 lakh cash along with a citation.
A distinguished jury consisting of Hindi film personalities Hema Malini, Simi Garewal and Anil Kapoor held thorough discussions before finalizing Lata's name, said T Subbarami Reddy in Hyderabad on Sunday. She has sung for almost all of Yash Chopra's films, he added.
TSR also remembered his association with the `Dil To Pagal Hai' director. “We made films like `Vijay', `Chandni', and `Lamhe' together. We were very close friends. He was a good human being. His `Silsila' happened to be the first film that was screened in my theatre, Parameshwari,“ he said and added, “While directors last for a maximum of 15-20 years in the industry, he has made films for 60 years.
His `Kabhi Kabhie' and `Deewar' stand as classics in Indian cinema.
The award ceremony will be an annual event as every year people who made great contributions to Indian cinema will be awarded.“ The philanthropist also said that besides the who's who of Mumbai film industry, Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithvi Raj Chavan and Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Manish Tewari will also grace the event.
